When you receive your licence file - it needs to be saved to the folder into which you installed Onyx.  Unless modified during installation, this will be C:\Program Files\Cavendish Instruments\Onyx.  . In addition you should also put a copy of the licence in your system folder. This is c:\winnt\system32 for NT/2000/XP or c:\windows\system for Windows 95/98/Me. The second copy is required for certain OLE operations.

How to find the unique identifier for your computer:

The Hardware Identifier Program to generate your unique ID can be started by clicking Hardware Identifier in Start:Onyx or by double clicking on HardwareID.exe in the installation folder on your hard drive. The hardware identifier program should be run on the computer on which you wish to run Onyx. The licence generated is machine (computer) specific – i.e. it is not transferable to another computer.
